«Divino fénix». An unpublished Lope de Vega’s sonnet at an unknown poetry competition (Toledo, 1594)

Abstract

This paper edits an unpublished sonnet by poet Lope de Vega, with which he entered an until now unknown poetry competition held in the parish of San Vicente de Toledo in 1594. A description of the rest of the poetic contributions is also provided. Lope participated in this competition together with some of his friends from the city, among them Gregorio de Angulo, which has led to some speculation about the date of a popular epistle that the Spanish ‘Phoenix’ dedicated to him.
