TWO UNPUBLISHED SPEECHES BY BARTOLOMÉ ALCÁZAR, FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE REAL ACADEMIA ESPAÑOLA

Abstract

This article recovers two speeches delivered by the Jesuit Bar- tolomé Alcázar to the Real Academia. Although they are held in the archives of the Academy itself, the texts have remained unpublished and have therefore been of difficult access for scholars. The first part describes the speeches and reveals Alcázar’s De rhetorica facultate as the main rhetorical source in one case and his very own Aphthonii Sophistae Progymnasmata in the other. The second part con- tains the edition.
