THE ADJECTIVE GEÓTICO IN LOPE DE VEGA’S EL PEREGRINO EN SU PATRIA, OR THE LIFE OF A MISPRINT

Abstract

The article examines the adjective geótico, applied to certain magic spells in Lope de Vega’s El peregrino en su patria, and proposes that it is a misprint of goéticos, a word derived from goecia or goetia, a kind of magic well known in treatises and commentaries on the subject from Antiquity to the seventeenth cen- tury. With the support of parallel texts, the article suggests an amendment and an explanation for geóticos (goéticos), a term which has been misinterpreted or ignored in successive editions of Lope’s work.
