Abstract

The Arabism azumbre is the only non-Latin word in Spanish that has developed the sequence [mbɾ]. However, far from being a problem, this peculiarity provides valuable details for the study of the evolution of Latin sequences [min] in Old Spanish. The conclusions obtained regarding the real chronology of these sequences will help to determine that azumbre was introduced in Old Spanish before the tenth century. This will support the idea that phonetically-motivated explanations can help researchers more precisely to identify the dates when some Arabisms were introduced in to Spanish.
