THE TRAGEDY <em>NINUS II</em>, BY CHARLES BRIFAUT, TRANSLATED AND ARRANGED BY JOSÉ JOAQUÍN DE MORA IN 1818

Abstract

In 1818 José Joaquín de Mora adapts the French tragedy Ninus II, by Charles Brifaut, which had been premiered in Paris, on 19 April 1813, performed by the actor François-Joseph Talma in the Théâtre Français. The Spanish author prepared his version for the Teatro del Príncipe, where it was staged on 4 June 1818 by the actor Isidoro Máiquez. In the printed edition the translator asserts that major changes had been made in order to adapt the play to Spanish taste and to correct the original’s weaknesses. In this paper I show the context of the translation and study Mora’s version on three levels: stylistic, dramatic and political.
