Abstract

An edition of the Marquis of Tarifa’s Journey to Jerusalem, purportedly issued in 1748, includes in a sort of prologue a repertoire of 23 books (some of which were unknown in Spain at the time) on travels to the Holy Land. In this article, these books are identified, and the repertoire’s real author is established. The article also shows that the ‘1748’ edition is actually the same as that printed in 1733, with the addition of some preliminary pages intended to win favour with King Ferdinand VII and his Secretary of State, José de Carvajal.
