Abstract

This article contains the critical edition and study of the Diccionario para emṿeźar a hablar (en) franqueado, which first appeared in 1909 in early editions of the satirical Sephardic newspaper El Soitarí in Smyrna, and happens to be the first humorous dictionary in Judeo-Spanish known to date. Through the format of any common monolingual dictionary, it uses various word games and inventive idea associations to ridicule the Frenchification of the language of Sephardi Jews at the time.
