Abstract

This study reviews the motif of the honourable peasant and the relationships it establishes in the codified society of the seventeenth century with the figure of the monarchy. The theme, dramatised by Lope in a very interesting comedy, El villano en su rincón, and not always interpreted in a coherent way by the modern critique, is dealt with again by a playwright of the second half of the century, Juan de la Hoz y Mota, in El montañés Juan Pascual, primer asistente de Sevilla, with clear changes of both a structural and an ideological nature that bring to light the changes in Golden Age dramatic aesthetics from a diachronic perspective.
