Abstract

The etymology of some patrimonial words has been the subject of long diatribes leading to many weak hypotheses. A more direct, deeper exploration of the rich Latin lexicon is necessary to identify the proper etymology and rigorously delimit its semantic field. Certain Latin meanings of well-known roots and terms have been almost completely disregarded, resort being made instead to use of onomatopoeic approaches and the confluence of hypothetical and undocumented terms of other languages before exhausting the possibilities of Vulgar Latin, the basis of the speech of all corners of Romania. This is the case of the Latin verb pangĕre and its participle pacta or pancta.
