Abstract

This paper analyses the comedy Jardines son laberintos o el mártir de Molina don Diego Coronel by José Joaquín Núñez, a barely known baroque author from Molina de Aragón, as well as the chapbooks (pliegos sueltos) derived from it from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, on the basis of copies located in various libraries. It is a comedia de cautivos, based on a legendary event and with a historical basis, on the martyrdom of Diego Suárez Coronel in Algiers. A wealth of handwritten and printed information on the comedy is provided, positioning it in its editorial, literary and historical context, and also demonstrating the evolution of the chapbooks derived from it with the titles Jardines son laberintos and La más ingrata hermosura.
